BIOGRAPHY

Her style is just as unique as her name and when you hear Valtina sing, you will say that she not sings, but she `sang’! God has blessed many musical artists or singers with a singing gift and Valtina definitely falls in that category. Like many others in the music industry, she too is proud to say that she began singing in church. It was Valtina’s grandmother who not only raised her, but also noticed her remarkable voice.

“By the time I was five years old, I was singing in the children’s choir at my grandfather’s church. I was so shy and scared; my grandmother would force me to get up and sing in church. It wasn’t until I was about 12 years old when realized that God had blessed me with the ability to sing”, Valtina stated.

With a background in Gospel music, Valtina also acquired a love for Rhythm & Blues music. Currently, her musical style is intertwined with the two genres of music and her vocal sound closely resembles that of former R&B artist, Stephanie Mills. Valtina also has other attributes in common with the famous recording artist; she too is petite in stature, but has a mega singing voice. Born in Memphis, Tennessee in the early 70’s, Valtina’s singing career began to take flight in her middle school years. She joined the middle school choir and soon won her first talent show in which she received a trophy and $50.00. “I couldn’t believe that I had won! There were other students whose performances were very good, ” stated Valtina. This was the beginning of a new era for the songstress.

By the time Valtina entered High School, she continued to pursue her love for singing and music. Not only did she excel on her school’s track team, but she also made strides in the school’s Swing Choir and Mass Choir. Valtina won every school talent show with the exception of one show in which she declined to perform in with one of her brothers, who is unfortunately now deceased. “My brother sang with someone else in that talent show. Sometimes I wish I had went ahead and sang with him, but I am ok with it now,” she expressed.

Valtina’s hard work did pay off. Her efforts earned her a choir scholarship at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas under the direction of Mr. Stephen L. Hayes. As she sang and traveled with the choir, her good fortune with talent shows continued to follow her. Valtina won several talent shows while attending college and she also performed at local social establishments in the Little Rock area.

Valtina soon moved back to Memphis, but she still continued to actively pursue her musical career. She also sang at local venues in Memphis as well as other events such as weddings, funerals and birthday parties. Then she began performing at Memphis’ Juneteenth Freedom Festival, the Main Street Sessions and she placed first in the Memphis’ Idol contest. To add to her repertoire of performances, Valtina has participated in Memphis’ nationally known events such as Memphis In May International Festival Inc. and the Africa In April Festival Inc.., which takes place each year on the world renowned Beale Street in downtown Memphis.

Recently, Valtina has also been blessed to have singing opportunities in other cities. She sang at a citywide celebration were city officials honored Ms. Pam Chatman, a television reporter and talk show host in Shaw, Mississippi. Valtina also performed in Las Vegas, Nevada in the USA World Showcase, formerly known as Star Search.

With all of the many occasions Valtina has experienced in her musical career, she still has a strong desire and goal to become a national recording artist. The diva says that some of her songs will tell a story about her life and how God has brought her this far! She also prays that her music will be a blessing and able to help to someone.
